Temporary School

In January 2009 firstsite established a Temporary School.

This artist-led initiative is a programme of possibilities: talks, seminars, screenings, performances, discussions, all chosen or devised by the artists themselves. Future events may be public, semi-public or intended solely for participants in the project. The group recently hosted a meal where conversation replaced food.

Temporary School will be self-organising, enabling participants to explore the possibilities of collaborative practice. The artists involved will test the idea that the institution, firstsite, can be occupied differently. It will also act as a model to explore how firstsite might prioritise ‘discussion’ as a form of practice in the future.

Temporary School is a response to several international artists’ initiatives which have attempted to rethink the idea and practice of ‘education’ inside and outside the Gallery.
