In collaboration with Colchester United FC and Colchester United Community Sports Trust, Associate Artists Lawrence Bradby and Jevan Watkins Jones are making connections between football and drawing as part of The Big Draw December 2012.
A football pitch and a piece of paper are both blank rectangular spaces on which something amazing can happen! A mazy run, a save at full stretch and a tasty flick on are all movements in space and can all be shown as a mark on paper.
We worked with Colchester United first and youth team players, Colchester United Community Sports Trust and Tendring Technology College students and parents to gather drawings of these football moves.
firstsite, in partnership with Colchester United Football Club, won a prestigious Drawing Inspiration Award from the Campaign for Drawing.

On Saturday 13 October we went to the Weston Homes Community Stadium for the Colchester United Vs Stevenage Town game. At half time Lawrence, Jevan and the firstsite team encouraged spectators to draw a move from the first half on giant blackboards.
On Saturday 20 October we were back at WHCS for Colchester United Vs Carlisle United. Inside the programmes were a blank sheet for spectators to draw a game move onto. Alternatively, they picked up a sheet to draw on from one of the firstsite team before the match. During half time live drawing took place on the big screen, and at the end of the game, spectator's drawings were given to one of the firstsite team to be displayed at firstsite.
From Thursday 13 - Saturday 15 December the resulting drawings were on display at firstsite. We also made a film with Kinura to document our preparation for the project, drawing in action on 20 October and drawing on the big screen at the stadium. This film was also shown over this weekend. If you missed out, you can view the film here.
