Brilliant family activities that are based on our exhibitions or that are specific to the season. It’s free and you can stay for as little or as long as you like, Just drop in on the day.
6 June: Art games in foyer
A selection of self led games in the foyer area for families to enjoy at their own leisure.
13 June: Found Sounds
Working with musician and sound artist Jos Dow you will use instruments, found objects, your own voice and body to explore the acoustics in the building.
20 June: Estival Festival : Firstsite Learning Festival
Summer Solstice with a difference including live art, performance art and a host of visual arts for you to try with your family.
27 June: Ginormous Painting
This Saturday come along and work with artist Nabil Ali.
- Make small paper boats to add to an overall installation. You can make at least 2 boats leaving one behind and taking one home.
- Have a go at using chalk on A3 black paper to copy John Virtue's abstract paintings – a great opportunity to explore our current exhibition with your family.
- You will be shown how to make your own black and white paint and then use this to paint your paper boats.
- You will also be invited to get involved in a giant group painting prepared on a ginormous paper boat (length 3m x Height 1.5m approx).
4 July: Alice Day
Firstsite goes Wonderland with a whole feast of things to do to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Alice in Wonderland. Expect top hats and teapots.
11 July: Instrument Menagerie with Grand Union Orchestra
Musicians from the outstanding Grand Union orchestra rock up to Firstsite with a host of instruments and sounds from around the world. Try out the instruments and create your own music. If you have an unusual instrument lying around the house – bring it along.
18 July: Comical Comics
Back by popular demand, join artists Luke Nash and Tom Armstrong for a session in creating extraordinary comic characters and comics as part of The Lightbulb Festival.
25 July: Summer Saturdays SEE-SEA-SEE
We will be organising both indoor and outdoor
sea-themed activities throughout the summer. Helping us create extraordinary art in the open air will be the young people from YAK and our Learning Associate Artist.
Summer Saturdays will also be held on August 1, 8, 15, 22, 29. Activity details will be available nearer the date.
5 September: The Vistula Sound Project
Participants will tune into the places they like to
listen, thinking about your favourite sounds and
then creating sounds in response to The Sea exhibition which can be recorded as part of the
project with sound artist Phil Mill.
12 September: Feeling the Paint
A session to get stuck into painting, literally. Using
your fingers and touch you will explore how paint
feels and then create your own touchy feely artwork.
19 September: Sketchbook Scenes
Using the artist sketchbook as inspiration you will
work with artist Jevan Watkins Jones to explore
what sketchbooks can be.
26 September: Workshops, Landscapes and Echoes
Exploring stories woven into the structure of our
landscapes, peeling away layers as well as an opportunity to get paint on your hands and feet with artist John Doubleday as part of the Roman River Festival.
