firstsite presents The Photography Studio: an evolving display of photographic portraits. Working with London based photographer, Lynn Weddle, this is an opportunity for visitors to the gallery to explore the theme of portraiture by actively adding to the exhibition.

Weddle intends to create a visual record of firstsite’s visitors over a six-week period. Using the idea of pin-boards as spaces to collect formal and informal, ‘snapshot’ photographs, the artist will develop her community based practice by engaging with visitors to the gallery. When she is working in The Photography Studio, Weddle will encourage viewers to become sitters, exploring self-portraiture through cable-release photography.  At other times participants are invited to bring in photographs of themselves, friends and family from home as additions to the growing display of studio portraits.

By using an everyday pin-board to exhibit the images she collects, Weddle will create an informal archive that mirrors the way we collect people in our homes – adding the latest snapshots and photographs of important events to albums, walls and mantelpieces.  Such activities reveal glimpses into our habits, interests and personalities and it is hoped that Weddle’s ‘collective space’ at firstsite will similarly reveal something about its visitors.

 

Take your portrait

Lynn will be her studio every week to work with visitors, please ask firstsite staff for details of exact availability. Visitors are welcome to bring in their own photographs at any time.
