27 May – 24 June 2006
Caroline Wright
Artist Space

firstsite is pleased to welcome Caroline Wright to the Artist Space. Based in Suffolk, she has recently been undertaking a residency at Visions Gallery in Tokyo; the work created during time this will form the basis of her activity in the Artist Space.

Since graduating from her MA at Norwich School of Art and Design in 2002, Wright's practice has been issue based. She works in a multi disciplinary way, using time-based media, live art and experimental photography to explore human communication and language. In previous pieces she has looked at the act of communication from physical and psychological perspectives, creating installation and sound-based works.

Wright’s work is often site specific, engaging people as participants. Whilst in Japan she intends to complete the work ‘Gesture’; a twin video piece comparing British and Japenese communication conventions. Wright attempts to capture the essence of both cultures by comparing body language, specifically the use of gesture. ‘Gesture’ is a reflection on eastern and western societies; it operates as a cultural document, exploring humankind and the peculiarities of one-to-one communication in relation to context.

Both films will be screened concurrently at the Japanese gallery and firstsite. Wright will be in Japan during the first week of her firstsite residency and will use the opportunity to test postal and digital forms of communication; sending faxes and emails to update the space and visitors. On her return, she will use the Artist Space as a place to distill the Japanese work, reflecting on both the film created and the items sent by post. The artist then hopes to continue investigating the material gathered on her trip, considering further the intense period of work that lead up to it.
