Natural Histories
Jan Dunning is an artist who has been exploring the potential of pinhole photography for the past four years. Natural Histories is her first exhibition in a public gallery and includes new work commissioned by firstsite, integrated with other recent work. Dunning uses the medium of pinhole photography to present a personal magical and metaphysical take on the world. Long exposures, infinite depth of field, home made cameras; these characteristics introduce elements of intuition, accident and ideas of the invisible and the unknowable, the fantastic and the unique. Natural Histories presents a series of surprising and theatrical images that simultaneously reveal and conceal themselves – the closer we get, the less seems to be explained.
