James Dodds, The Blue Boat

24 November 2001 – 2 February 2002
James Dodds
Shipshape

James Dodds is one of Essex’s best know artists. He has been working in partnership with firstsite on Shipshape as an evolving touring exhibition since 2000.

Shipshape showcases a shifting body of prints and paintings. Dodds takes as starting point the East of England’s coastal areas and boating yards alongside the boat form itself. Through direct representation and abstraction Dodds seeks to recall, record and elevate aspects of everyday life by the sea.

Dodds trained as a shipwright before studying at the Royal College of Art. Traces of both these heritages can be found in his carving method and mark making techniques. Dodds has also illustrated numerous publications with his prints; series from these have often appeared in Shipshape to contribute to the exhibition as a survey of his career.

Shipshape is re-curated in association with the artist for each venue it tours to.

Publication(s)
firstsite has produced two publications to accompany Shipshape: Shipshape (pp144, £9.95) and Shipshape Underway (pp48, £6.50). Both are fully illustrated; and reflect upon Dodds’ practice through essays and interviews with the artist.
