29 November 2003 – 21 February 2004
Simon Carter
Another Day in the Beach

Simon Carter Another day on the beach brings together a new body of work by this significant Essex based artist for the first time.

Carter is renowned for his energetic drawings and large-scale paintings that take their inspiration from a small stretch of coast near his home in Frinton-on-Sea. For him landscape is not a ‘static object to be depicted, but a cycle of processes’. He has developed a unique working practice; moving daily between coast and studio Carter creates endless drawings on the beach that feed into his canvases. Fodder for each other, paintings and drawings introduce new ideas, motifs and moods.

Carter moves effortlessly between the language of abstraction and that of figurative painting, as he charts the ebb and flow of his daily life through stunning colour and gestural mark. He has a personal iconography that includes rocks, waves, sea wall, cows, swimmers, tower blocks and beach huts. These elements are used creatively to convert the little valued genre of the landscape painting into vivid and surprising images.
