Colchester Fine Art Open 2006

Portraits

The 2006 Colchester Fine Art Open focuses on portraiture. This exhibition has been themed to complement the other exhibitions and education projects happening at firstsite this summer.

For this year’s show, a panel including Emily Cole – a Norwich-based artist who worked in firstsite’s Artist Space earlier this year – selected works from over one hundred submissions. The resulting exhibition is a varied and diverse display of art practices and approaches.

In many cases this is an opportunity to see work by artists who have shown their drawings, paintings, prints and sculptures regularly in the region and beyond. Here they have submitted work only created within the parameters of portraiture. The exhibition aims to explore this traditional subject matter in art whilst pushing the boundaries of it too.

A biennial celebration of work by Colchester Art Society members has a long history with the Minories; exhibitions by CAS have been held here since the late 1950s. This relationship is one that firstsite continues to foster and develop. To mark the Society’s 60th anniversary, an exhibition from the CAS permanent collection is currently on show in firstsite’s Function Room.

Unless otherwise stated, all works in the exhibition for sale.
